The Duke Blue Devils did not play the Drexel Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Oct. 26. But after hearing deafening chants of "Let's go Drexel!" and seeing fans with blue and gold paint on their chests despite an outside temperature in the thirties, it sure felt like it.
As "Welcome to the Jungle" played during the introduction of the starting lineups, there was only one message going out: "Welcome to Midnight Madness."
Is it hard to believe that over seven months passed since students last had the opportunity to experience basketball fever at Drexel? It seemed like an eternity since the last time the DAC Pack screamed multiple chants of "This is our house!"
But during this event, not even midterms the following day were going to prevent the passionate fans from attending one of the most anticipated events of the year. For Drexel students, basketball could not return too soon.
Hundreds of fans stood inside the DAC to celebrate Midnight Madness, the free event marking the start of the 2006-07 basketball season.
The people in attendance took advantage of free admission, cheesesteaks and prizes while watching entertaining events, including the slam dunk contest and three-point competition. The exciting atmosphere only made the event more exciting for basketball fan Lonnie Snyder.
"This place is intense!" Snyder exclaimed. "I see a lot of people jumping around, but more people need to get up. I want this place to be rocking."
Men's coach James "Bruiser" Flint was pleasantly surprised to see so many fans supporting Drexel basketball.
"Last time we had Midnight Madness, only seven fans attended," Flint said. "But they did a great job. I told the guys that I was putting the pressure on to make sure we had a good turnout."
"It's great to see how far Drexel basketball has come to get a turnout like this," Dan Baker, the play-by-play voice of the Dragons, said. "I can remember doing Midnight Madness programs where there weren't nearly as many people. It's nice to see so many people supporting Drexel athletics."
