The Steinbright Career Development Center is working on ways to improve the way students secure co-op jobs.
The University has one of the largest co-op programs in the world. Approximately 4,000 Drexel students go on co-op every year; the vast majority find their jobs through the SCDC's online application system.
SCDC helps C-Round students
Peter Frank, executive director for SCDC, commented that there are a number of ways the SCDC helps students who have trouble finding a job in the C-Round.
"We have jobs that go unfilled, so coordinators try to match up those jobs with students that haven't found jobs but maybe did not apply for that position. Throughout the year, we offer workshops on a variety of different things, such as writing a resume, how to conduct yourself in an interview, how to find jobs. That is all part of the skills that we are trying to teach students. Those are life skills."
Focus on improvements
Frank wants to improve the co-op program by focusing on not only SCDC's basic student services, but also on offering students a wider breadth of job opportunities. In the interest of that goal, he recently appointed Kathleen Burns to the new position of manager of job development.
"[Burns] is working on developing more jobs not only locally, but nationally and internationally, because part of what I think we need to do is have more jobs not necessarily in the Philadelphia general area, but more jobs nationally and internationally to offer students better options," he said.
Besides just creating more geographically diverse job opportunities, Frank is looking toward improving the jobs that already exist within the current system.
"We are going through the process this summer of evaluating the jobs we have. Let us set up a standard and measure all the jobs we have here against those standards," he said.
New employment opportunities
Recently, Frank convinced Microsoft to join the co-op program. Microsoft Corp. already has a cooperative education program in place, but until last week it did not include Drexel students. At the start of this term, four Drexel undergraduates and two graduate students began internship positions with Microsoft.
