Her experience in school and with student teaching has allowed Michaelidis to advise her peers in teacher education. She preaches the values of hard work, staying focused and striving to meet the needs of the students and their assignments. She advises students to relax and enjoy their teaching experiences.
Michaelidis also advises fellow students in the education major to not waste time, not give up, study hard and try to finish their courses the first time so they do not have to repeat them. Also, she advises them to take summer courses and to set goals for themselves and remain focused on them. She described how she put down on paper what goals she needed to accomplish in order to complete her degree in three years instead of four.
Michaelidis is a member of the Future Educators of Drexel. FEDs is a club for teacher education majors that organizes activities including turkey drives, outings to baseball and basketball games, and holiday parties. Michaelidis served as secretary for the club this past year.
After graduating from Drexel, Michaelidis hopes to find a teaching job that will put her in the classroom in September.
She is currently waiting for the teaching certification that will permit her to teach in New Jersey. Michaelidis maintains that she does not mind working in the city because she finds it interesting how the students react to simple lessons. Michaelidis also dreams of opening her own school for kindergarten students and plans on receiving her master's in special education next year.
Michaelidis' peers rave about her Michaelidis' performance in school and her personality.
"I know she is a very driven person and she always does all of her work," said Laura Guzzi, a junior majoring in teacher education. "She is a great asset to the School of Education. She is a great individual and is a very hard-working girl. She always goes above and beyond what is expected of her."
Cassandra Prentiss, a senior majoring in teacher education, said that Michaelidis is very intelligent and driven, and that she is a goal-oriented person. "When she puts her mind to something, she gets it done. She is not just intelligent in one subject, she is very well-rounded."
"Athena Michaelidis is the kind of student Drexel can be proud of," said Deanna Federman, an adjunct professor in SoE. "Although she tends to worry a bit too much, it is always about being responsible and doing work which she can feel proud of. She is a delight and is the kind of student one wants to talk about. She is wonderful."
