The University and the Powelton Village Civic Association are in the final stages in negotiations on the future of the Consolidated Laundry Lot located at 32nd Street and Powelton Avenue.
Rumors are abound ranging from lawsuits filed against both parties, PVCA halting the construction of the new residence hall on 33rd and Race Streets, to a proposed a multi-thousand dollar grant used by the University to beautify the Spring-Winter Community Garden also situated on 33rd and Race Streets.
The Triangle attempted to confirm these rumors with PVCA and University administrators but failed to receive a reply. Both sides do not want to provide information as they feel it could damage the progress in their negotiations.
"We are at a sensitive point in our negotiations and do not wish to jeopardize an agreement by commenting at this point," Michael Jones, archivist for PVCA, said.
"We can characterize the discussions as wide-ranging and fruitful. We look forward to resolving our outstanding issues soon and will be glad to comment further when negotiations are complete. PVCA believes that Drexel and Powelton can, and must, work out ways to contribute to each others growth and vitality."
However, a few anonymous sources have asserted that both parties will come to a reasonable solution within a few weeks.
"The issues that are being negotiated are confidential," Chris Duffy, Secretary for PVCA, said. "However I assure you that progress has been made and once an agreement has been made, both sides will be satisfied."
The University wants to use the lot to erect a 600 resident, six-story residential building with a parking garage, parking lot and retail stores to meet the growing needs of more on-campus housing for the increased enrollment of University students. PVCA would like to see the lot be used to as a shared, green, recreational space.
