Premiere Course on Sculptor and Interactive Technology
The Great Works Symposium announced a new course for the fall term: UNIV 241, "Media Interactivity: New Learning Technology." The class is set for Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 p.m.-4:50 p.m., and will be a three credit course. UNIV 241 is a team-taught class centered on interactive technology. Section lecturers will consist of technological historian from the Department of History and Politics, and modern arts historian Joseph Gregory from the Department of Visual Studies.. The key focal point of this course will be on interactive learning technology, and it will also highlight the Histor System, an interactive program facilitating a virtual dialogue with the late sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, who died in 1976. Lipchitz created numerous critical sculptures for Philadelphia and the Barnes Foundation. He was also acquainted with Picasso, Modigliani, Gris and many other
influential artists of the 20th century.
Therefore, UNIV 241 will contain a minor focus on Lipchitz and 20th century art. Media interactivity is observed from the perspectives of digital technology, history, education, psychology, information science, film and video production and telecommunications. An outstanding elective for all majors, students will have a rewarding experience in learning about Jacques Lipchitz, and it also serves as an art history elective which can be counted towards the minor in art history.
Another course, "Sculpture in Response to Jacques Lipchitz," VSST 465-001 will utilize the Histor System. In this class, students will form small carvings responding to the work of Lipchitz, and will be team-taught by Lydia Hunn and Ephraim Russell.
