Spotlight on Volunteering is a weekly look at opportunities on campus for those looking to make a difference in the Drexel community. Public servants interested in participating in these events should visit http://www.drexel.edu/cce. Play Night at Colony House
Communicate with children on a one-on-one basis in this program which offers both children and volunteers a worthwhile experience. The event will take place at Colony House in Chester, July 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information contact Lissa Hilsee at (215) 564-4544 or Lissa@gpcares.com. Four to six volunteers are needed for the event.
Reading STARS
Come and help fight illiteracy by working with a student currently enrolled in the Reading STARS program. All materials are scripted and easy to understand with no tutoring experience required. Reading STARS takes place July 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Independence Charter School. 12 to 15 volunteer will be required for the event. Book Club at the Fountains at Logan Square East
Two to three volunteers are needed to lead a book club for seniors. The books will be provided requiring volunteer to read out loud. This event takes place July 26 from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information contact Sarah DiGioia at (215) 246-4612 or sarah.digoia@towers.com.
BINGO! at Kearsley Retirement Community Center
Come in and help call out numbers and distribute prizes to winners at this West Philadelphia retirement house. This event brings joy and excitement to the seniors and volunteers who serve at the event. For more information contact Ruth El at (215) 365-3284 or (215) 917-9255. The event will take place July 27 from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Book Club at American Postal Workers House
Two to three helpers will be required to come and read to senior citizens at this Center City bookclub. Volunteers can pick books from the house's library or bring their own. For more information contact Kristina Lengel at (215) 988-3352 or lengelk@dbr.com. The event takes place July 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Hayes Manor Spa Party
Come out and give the senior ladies of Hayes Manor a day of beauty by painting their nails and offering other spa goodies. Two to three volunteers are needed to serve at the event. For more information contact Karen Bates at (610) 272-4912 or (215) 444-8278. This event will run July 23 from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Bucks County Housing Group
Help serve the low-income families at this local Bucks County food pantry. Volunteers will serve by taking and retrieving food orders for the residents and sorting out donations. For more information contact Barbara Chase at (215) 752-320 or barbc@langhornepres.org. The event takes place July 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Neighbors in Action
Join a group of community members and that fights urban blight! Greater Philadelphia Cares volunteers will work alongside residents to improve their
neighborhoods and do gardening projects as well. Volunteers will raise garden beds and plant vegetables while assisting in building a new community
garden. For information on how to help NIA, call (215) 564 4544. The next event will be Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 9:30 am-12 pm.
