First, what are the necessities for living in the residence halls? Obviously, plenty of clothes for a variety of weather conditions is a must with the temperatures varying from 20 degrees during the day in the winter to over 90 degrees in the summer. The University's residence hall bedrooms include a short nightstand with a few drawers which add to the amount of space available in the armoire's drawers to make plenty of storage for a standard set of clothes. The armoire also contains a tension rod for hanging clothes and a shelf for more clothes or personal care accessories. Each desk contains a few drawers for supplies, a fluorescent light, a pull-out drawer for a keyboard and mouse, and a shelf on top for placing additional items. An extra-long twin bed is also standard. East Hall and Van Rensselaer Hall both contain common areas that residents share with their suitemates. These areas typically contain a living area with a couch, two chairs, and small table as well as a kitchenette. The kitchenette includes a refrigerator, sink and in Van R, a stove. East Hall has full kitchens on each floor which have stoves. Both East and Van R have a bathroom and shower room in each suite. In these dorms, residents are responsible for keeping the entire suite clean during the time they live there. In the remaining freshmen dorms, Calhoun, Kelly, New Towers and Myers, floors or wings share a kitchen and bathrooms. Both are cleaned by professional staff.
In addition to clothes, students will want to bring linens for their beds. Make sure to buy extra-long twin sheets as regular twin sheets will not fit. Pillows, a blanket and a comforter are necessities. Bath towels, hand towels and washcloths allow students to stay clean, which is appreciated by other students and professors alike. In addition, most students will need a majority of the following toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, combs, brushes, shampoo, hair gel, hair spray, deodorant, soap, sunscreen, cotton swabs, tissue, shaving items, makeup and nail care items. In addition, it's a good idea to pick up a first aid kit or ensure you have the following items: band aids, antibacterial cream, antacids, cough drops, decongestants, pain killers and vitamins. Students living in East or Van R, will want to bring items for the kitchenette such as dish soap, dishes, cups, silverware, and cooking pots and utensils. For those who plan on doing laundry at school, be sure to bring a laundry bag, detergent, and fabric softener. A computer is a must for almost every academic major at Drexel and there's no reason not to take advantage of the blazing fast internet connection which is provided to each student. An arsenal of school supplies including a calculator, pens, pencils, a stapler, paper clips, tape, a ruler, highlighters, glue, sticky notes, index cards, scissors, a hole puncher, folders and a filing system or some kind will prove to be useful. It is also a good idea to bring a few books such as a dictionary, thesaurus, planner, or address book. Along with a computer students may want to bring a desk lamp, an alarm clock, and a printer. Don't forget utilities such as a wastebasket, a fan, a surge protector, batteries, a flashlight, air freshener, an umbrella and a backpack.
