Volunteer Buddy
Volunteer buddies provide companionship, limited emotional and practical support to a man, woman or child in Philadelphia living with HIV/AIDS. Buddies are given training before being placed with a consumer (client); and on-going and supportive supervision is provided. Monthly "Buddy Meetings" allow buddy volunteers to meet, greet and socialize with other buddy volunteers and to express (in a small group setting) their thoughts and feelings about their volunteer experiences over the last month. Hours to volunteer are flexible according to the volunteer's own schedule and its compatibility with their consumer's schedule. The only request is for volunteer buddies to see their client once or twice a month and phone their consumer once a week to "check in" with them. Weekend and evening volunteering is very much an option! Buddy volunteers should be caring, sensitive, empathetic, honest and flexible. Good communication skills, the ability to empower others, the ability to set limits and boundaries, and the ability to ask for help when necessary are essential! For more information contact Matthew Faccenda, from Action Aids, at 215-981-3324.
Neighbors In Action
Join a group of conscientious community members to fight urban blight that plagues the city of Philadelphia. Greater Philadelphia Cares volunteers work alongside residents to beautify the neighborhood and do gardening projects across the city. This project will take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
