Wiggins will replace former Dean of Libraries Carol Montgomery, who will be retiring at the end of this academic year. Wiggins will serve as the interim dean beginning July 1 until a permanent candidate is found.
The University Librarian Search Committee is currently conducting the search and plans to have a Dean of Libraries in place by the start of fall term. The Committee is headed by Director of the School of Education William Lynch.
Montgomery will spend the next two and a half months getting Wiggins ready for his new position.
"Montgomery will be including me in the planning for any situations that might continue beyond her tenure," Wiggins said.
"These include initiatives to continue building our online institutional repository called "D-Space", which is an exciting part of our university archives. We're also taking a look at cutting-edge technologies in libraries world-wide that maximize library services and resource accessibility, including systems for searching across multiple online library databases, and for organizing information about our burgeoning electronic resources."
As of July 1 Wiggins will proceed with his position in one of two ways. If a successful candidate has already been chosen he will then be supplying information to the incoming dean to help the individual prepare for the position.
If a candidate has not been chosen then he will maintain and improve the high standards of services and collections that are provided to students and faculty at all library locations.
Wiggins, however, does not plan to apply for the permanent position but plans to support the search committee's efforts and work with the successful candidate.
Wiggins also provided some light on MCP Hospital Florence Moore Library's recent massive flooding.
"The situation with the library, linked with the fate of the MCP Hospital building and the fact that Tenet owns the facilities, is under the direct supervision of Lenore Hardy, Director of the Health Sciences Libraries.
She has worked hard to keep the library open as long as possible for the students but the library is now closed. She is currently directing the efforts to move important materials to another location."
Wiggins' colleagues shared their thoughts on his recent promotion.
