Bingo with Senior Citizens

This project takes place on Wed., April 27 from 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Volunteers will help by calling numbers and distributing prizes to the winners. Volunteers have the opportunity to perform service and have an exciting evening that will bring joy to the senior citizens. For more information contact Ruth El at 215-365-3284.
Neighbors In Action
Join a group of conscientious community members to fight urban blight that plagues the city of Philadelphia. Greater Philadelphia Cares volunteers work alongside residents to beautify the neighborhood and do gardening projects across the city. Volunteers will be raising garden beds and planting vegetables, building a new community garden and much more. For more information contact Philadelphia Cares at 215-564-4544. This project will take place April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kids Around Town
Children need to learn their civic rights and responsibilities. This award-winning curriculum cultivates citizenship and problem-solving in kids through hands-on, inquiry-based projects to help better their community. For more information contact Gordon Todorovac at 610-574-8836. Project takes place on Sat., April 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Bucks County Housing Group
Support low-income families of Bucks County by volunteering at the food pantry. Volunteers will interact with local residents, taking and retrieving food orders for them along with sorting donations. For more information contact Barbara Chase at 215-752-3200. Project takes place Thurs., April 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Volunteer Buddy
Volunteer buddies provide companionship, limited emotional and practical support to a man, woman or child in Philadelphia living with HIV/AIDS. Buddies are given training before being placed with a consumer (client); and on-going and supportive supervision is provided. Monthly "Buddy Meetings" allow buddy volunteers to meet, greet and socialize with other buddy volunteers and to express (in a small group setting) their thoughts and feelings about their volunteer experiences over the last month. Hours to volunteer are flexible according to the volunteer's own schedule and how it meshes with their consumer's schedule. The only request is for volunteer buddies to see their client once or twice a month and phone their consumer once a week to "check in" with them. Weekend and evening volunteering, then, is very much an option! Buddy volunteers should be caring, sensitive, empathetic, honest and flexible. Good communication skills, the ability to empower others, the ability to set limits and boundaries, and the ability to ask for help when necessary are essential!
For more information contact Matthew Faccenda, from Action Aids, at 215-981-3324.
