MetLife awards University City District initiative $10,000

The MetLife Foundation honored the University City District's Baltimore Avennue Commercial Corridor Initiative and the Philadelphia Police Department at a private luncheon April 12 with a $10,000 award for significant achievements in decreasing crime and helping to revitalize Philadelphia's University City neighborhood.
MetLife Foundation Program Manager April Hawkins and others presented the award at a private celebration at the UCD office.
Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, UCD Substation Police Lieutenant Fred Carbonara, UCD Executive Director Lewis Wendell, UCD Senior Director of Clean and Safe John Fenton, and University of Pennsylvania Senior Vice President of Public Safety Maureen Rush received recognition for their roles.
UCD has partnered with various organizations such as the Philadelphia Police Department and Penn Police to address crime around University City. Founded in 1997, the UCD is a business improvement district funded by various area institutions. Aimed at building effective partnerships to maintain a clean and safe environment to promote, plan and advocate the University City community.
UCD was among 200 other applicants selected nationwide for the award by MetLife. MetLife, established in 1976, provides grants to pilot the Community Safety Initiative. The MetLife foundation supports health, educations, civic and cultural programs throughout the U.S. More information can be found at their Web site http://www.metlife.org/.
