Students received an e-mail outlining University policy for final examinations from the Provost's office March 9.
The announcement came from Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jacques Catudal.
Catudal stated that an unusually high number of complaints about policy violations warranted clarification because some individuals may not be aware of University policy.
The policy states that a final exam must be given during finals week, unless waived by the department head. Take home examinations may be given, but must be approved by the department head in advance and are due at the officially scheduled examination hour.
No final exams may be given by faculty during the last week of class, the policy states. Faculty members are also not authorized to change the day, time or location of the examination.
Under the policy, students are also limited to taking up to two finals per day. If a student has three scheduled in one day, a special exam will be given. In the fall and spring quarters, the course with the highest course number will give a special exam, while in the winter and summer quarters, this responsibility will fall on the professor of the lowest course number.
