An incident reported as arson occurred at Kelly Hall March 10.

Director of Public Safety Bernard Gollotti commented on the incident, saying that a student lit a "poster" or "some sort of paper" on fire in an elevator in the residence halls.

Reports from students indicate that the building was evacuated and that the Fire Marshal was called in to investigate.

A full report from Public Safety was not available due to the time the event occurred. Gollotti stated that he had heard about the event, but was out of the office at the time The Triangle contacted him. A full report was unavailable to Gollotti, but would be made available sometime March 11.

Arson is defined by the Department of Public Safety as all violations of State laws and municipal ordinances relating to arson and attempted arson.

There was one case of reported arson during the 2001 and another reported during 2002 on campus, with the one in 2002 occurring in a residence hall according to crime statistics available on the Department of Education's Office of Post Secondary Education Web site. Crime statistics for 2004 have not yet been submitted.

Under the Clery Act, all post-secondary institutions that receive federal assistance, including private Universities like Drexel, must submit a report of criminal activity reported on campus by Oct. 1 of the following year according to the Act. Currently on the Department of Education Web site are statistics for incidents over the past three years.
