Issue date: 3/11/05 Section: News
Chairman for the Provost Search Committee Chuck Pennoni was present at the Faculty Senate meeting March 8 to answer questions regarding the search, the progress of which has been kept confidential.

Pennoni confirmed that the committee has narrowed its choices down to two candidates, with one of the candidates coming from another university and the other being Drexel's current Interim Provost Ali Houshmand.

The first choice of the committee and University President Constantine Papadakis is the candidate from another university. "The President is currently negotiating with candidate number one," Pennoni said. "We hope to get a decision out of candidate number one, one way or the other, the week of March 21."

If "candidate number one" accepts, the next step will be a trip to campus to meet with various constituencies of the Drexel community including administrators, faculty, the board of trustees and students.

Pennoni began his presentation on the provost search with a chronology of events that begins December 2003 when Papadakis approached Pennoni about forming a search committee for a provost. Also at that time, Papadakis interviewed some consultants and selected Spencer Stewart to assist in the provost search process.

After Pennoni agreed to chair the committee, he and Papadakis held a working session. At this Jan. 7, 2004 meeting, they looked over drafts of the position descriptions, drafts of ads and where they would put the ads, among other things. They also discussed timing and a schedule.

The committee for the provost search was established that January as well. One of the goals when selecting committee members was to "make sure we had a cross-section of all the constituencies of the Drexel community." Included on the committee are faculty members, trustees, alumni, a dean, a student and chairs of various other committees.

A committee planning session was held in April 2004. Stewart came in and discussed what they were doing, had done and planned to do. They had contacted 425 people. Out of these 425 people, 96 prospects were garnered. Approximately 50 C.V.'s came out of the prospects. Only 12 responses came from the ads. There were also three candidates from within the University.
