The School of Education underwent its periodic review by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Feb. 23-25.

The review team of the state's DoE visited the school Feb. 23 in order to assess its teacher education programs and completed their visit Feb. 25. The Department reviews all teacher education programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on a five-year basis. Institutions are evaluated based on common standards including mission, assessment, admissions, design, field experiences, students teaching, collaboration, advising and monitoring, exit criteria and faculty. In addition, the representatives conversed with faculty and staff, as well as students and also reviewed documentation prepared by the SoE.

This is the first time that the SoE has undergone the formal review process based on standards passed in 2001. In past years, a paper review was conducted, which the SoE passed without difficulties. The SoE has hosted on-site certification reviews in prior years using the pre-2001 series of criteria and also did not experience any problems. In order to prepare for the on-site review, the SoE continuously reviews its curriculum to ensure that it is in accord with the guidelines established by the DoE.

"The faculty and staff of the School of Education have worked very hard and put in extra hours for the past eight months in preparation for this review," Director of Marketing and Recruitment for the School of Education, Daniel Hanson, told The Triangle.

"We fully expect the review process to go well and to be approved for another five years."

Many times, the review team makes recommendations to the institutions being reviewed.

"We look forward to receiving the review team's feedback and will fully implement those recommendations that will improve the SoE for the betterment of our students and the Commonwealth," said Hanson.

"During the exit interview, members of the on-site review team were very impressed with the demonstrated commitment of the students, faculty and staff of the SoE," added Daniel Hanson.

"They also made positive comments about the School's vision and plans for growth, and the seamless integration of technology into the undergraduate curriculum."

The review team was also noted as saying that "the on-line programs were a plus for the School, and that the students attracted to the graduate programs are of a high quality and highly motivated." The team even supported "closer relationships and collaboration between the SoE and other departments within the University."

The review team, chaired by Anne Marie Burton of Immaculata University, consisted of fifteen members who represented many diverse areas of education.
