The University will soon be the second school in the world to offer the Doctorate in Nursing Program.

The program has already received approval from the Faculty Senate and is awaiting approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

"While it appears that Drexel will have the world's second official DrNP Program, our program will be the first Clinical Research Doctorate of Nursing Practice in the world for nursing science and not primary care," Director of Doctoral Nursing Program Michael Dreher said.

"The world's first DrNP Program was approved just about two weeks ago at Columbia University, but their Doctoral of Nursing Practice is in Primary Care and have thus billed themselves as the first Clinical Nursing Doctorate."

The DrNP program is modeled after the Doctor of Public Health degree. In addition, the program is designed for any advanced nurses, such as midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. The program also prepares a nurse to become an educator, scientist or fill an executive role.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education concluded its on-site evaluation of the DrNP proposal Feb. 15-17 and the University now awaits the final approval.

The visit included meetings with faculty, administrators and prospective students of the program. Dreher anticipates receiving full approval from the department and will then begin admitting students.

"We feel we are on track to admit 15 students this fall and the likely application deadline will be in mid-June for just this year."

"The DrNP Program went through all levels of internal review successfully," Dean of College of Nursing and Health Professions Gloria Donnelly told The Triangle.

"The program was first reviewed and approved by the CNHP Committee on Academic Affairs. The program proposal then went to the Senate Committee on Academic Affairs for review and recommendations. Finally, the full Senate gave the program two readings and the program received full Senate approval at the second reading in January. The Faculty Senate was very helpful in all of its deliberations with faculty who designed the program."
