Drexel Republican support pathetic at Santorum visit

In an effort to counter the Drexel Democrats' protest of Senator Santorum, a group consisting of seven University of Pennsylvania College Republicans and what I can only assume as the three Drexel College Republicans gathered in front of Behrakis Hall. As the Drexel Democrats and their coalition or approximately 50 began to chant "hey hey, ho ho, Senator Santorum has got to go," the College Republicans chanted what could be described as either a huge gaffe, or, even better, the truth.

"Hey hey, ho ho, Social Security has got to go!"

If I'm not mistaken, Senator Santorum came to Drexel to talk about Social Security "reform" that would lead to the program's solvency. Granted, his plan would lead to the total destruction of the Social Security system, but generally, that's not something the republicans want to go around and chant.

Nonetheless, it's something that us Drexel University College Republicans managed to do. Way to go, guys. The Republican establishment will be thrilled with you.

The story has already been picked up by the media. CNN managed to show a clip of the chants on Inside Politics last Wednesday, and the gaffe is being widely circulated through the blogs. At this time, I'd like to personally commend William Mulgrew and the College Republicans for making my job easier.

Speaking of William Mulgrew, who will no doubt try to portray the Drexel Democrats' move as disruptive and disrespectful (when in fact Drexel University commended our organization for being respectful, peaceful, and working with them during the course of the entire protest), I managed to perform a Google search of the event, and what I found could only be characterized as some very interesting comments (better known as lies) on FreeRepublic.com.

According to Mulgrew's posts, he likes "to boast that (the College Republicans') membership is three times the size of the Drexel Democrats." What I found to be ironic with this statement are two things: A.) how does he know the size of our organization? And, B.) If the College Republicans are so huge, how come only three Drexel Republicans counter-protested? How come, the day before our debate with them in November, their chairman contemplated canceling because they could not find a third person for the debate? (They eventually did...he served as their third member at the Santorum event). So, once again, we've either got lies here, or we've got a total lack of mobilization on their behalf. Either one speaks wonders for their organization.

On the bright side, perhaps they can find a member in media-savvy Drexel University President Papadakis. When I personally presented Dr. Papadakis with the Social Security pamphlet that the democrats prepared for the event, he was schmoozing with several of his Drexel colleagues. Taki was going on about how Santorum's social security plan was amazing, and how much money he would have made if the plan were implemented in the past. I wonder if he's a republican...

When the Drexel Democrats mentioned that Drexel University's political bias should be questioned, we weren't kidding. However, to be fair, I must mention that Drexel is eager and willing to work with us on a second Social Security forum with a democrat speaker. And who knows -- maybe the College Republicans can show up and embarrass themselves on national television once again.
