Drexel has proven itself to be on the right track; why else would a multi-billion dollar broadcasting cooperation waste time, personnel and resources to create a reality TV show with our University as its focus?
We feel very strongly that this is a positive thing for the University, since it will get name recognition on a national level to a degree never thought of before - in a weekly prime time slot. Another benefit to this is that it will unite the campus, as the curiosity of Drexel students will get the best of them and they will see how their fellow students live, realizing that they are not alone in their problems and hopefully seeing faces of people they can relate to on the television will bring everyone closer as a campus community.
With apathy a growing problem on campus, we were a little surprised to see a large number of students auditioning for this series. Granted it is a chance to get on TV, but the fact that a large number of students who appear to be inactive are coming out for something is a sign that everyone is still awake in University City.
Speaking of the UCD, this is a great opportunity for the city of Philadelphia to regain some of its former glory. With the Real World still a vivid memory, another reality series is going to start with the City of Brotherly Love as its focal point. Even though we entered the national spotlight with our Eagles, our time in the limelight was short lived. Instead of waiting until next season to hear mention of Philadelphia, or watching reruns of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, we can instead watch our fellow students and their parents attend classes and go through the normal problems that all students face.
One other reason this is good is that with national attention, the University will ensure that the students in the show will not face administrative problems, or that with a camera in the faces of certain individuals, that problems will get solved in a timely manner. Granted that things have been steadily improving, this is a great way to boost improvements even further since there is not only a necessity to improve, but also a final deadline which is set for when the camera starts to roll.
Even though some may feel that reality TV shows lack reality, this one seems closer to our hearts since it is about real people in a real situation, going to college. However to the parents who will be attending the school, we only hope that they can adjust to the different type of lifestyle that college students have, since we all have things that we prefer our parents not know about, such as our actual bedtime on Thursday night er ... um ... Friday morning.
