Skaters, both at the University and surrounding area, will soon be able to enjoy a public skatepark.

Located south of the Philadelphia Art Museum, the skatepark will reside within the 8,900 acres of the Fairmont Park, which is along the Schuylkill River.

Students will have to cross a bridge to use the park, but it is a small price to pay for free use of the facilities.

Other activities that the park hosts are boating, hiking, biking, roller blading, fishing, rock climbing and running.

The final public meetings regarding the issue will be held Jan. 28 and Jan. 29. The goals of these hearings are to raise public awareness of the project and to engage public opinion, according to a press release by QWIC, Inc.

Named the Schuylkill River Skatepark Project, it is obvious what the purpose is, but over time the concept will become reality.

The first step after the meeting will be the creation of a final design by a team consisting of AB Arch, Synterra Lt., Purkiss Rose RSI, SkateNerd, Inc. Damiano and Long Consulting Engineers, and QWIC, Inc.

Currently no information has been made available regarding possible start dates or a completion time.
