As hackers continue to make Windows operating systems look like swiss cheese, Microsoft is taking steps to help its users protect themselves.
Recently, Microsoft bought Giant Software Company, which produces anti-spyware software.
On Jan. 6, Microsoft made anti-spyware software available for free on its Web site in a launch code-named "Atlanta". Microsoft will not stop there, either.
Next week, the company plans to release a tool to remove different types of malware, like viruses and worms. For now, Microsoft encourages its customers to buy antivirus from companies like Symantec and McAfee.
In the future, Microsoft will probably offer its own standalone software like Symantec's or McAfee's.
The markets showed this fact as Symantec's stock fell 7 percent and McAfee's fell 5 percent. While pricing plans have not yet been created, Microsoft plans to start charging for this software sometime in the summer.
