Alex Daley, an academic relations manager from Microsoft, talked about the MSDNAA, being a student ambassador, the 2005 Imagine Cup, and some of Microsoft's upcoming products as part of an MCS event Dec. 9.
The MSDNAA, Microsoft Software Developer's Network Academic Alliance, offers access to Microsoft tools like Visual Studio, including old versions and previews of new technology. This is open to all Drexel students and staff and can be found at http://www.msdnaa.net.
Student ambassadors are on-campus Microsoft resources who are taught how to train people to use Microsoft software, organize events around campus, and set up competitions for students. Microsoft rewards their student ambassadors by giving them advanced access to software. Daley also said that many ambassadors get national recognition and have gone on to work for Microsoft. Daley told students interested in becoming Microsoft ambassadors to e-mail him at adaley@microsoft.com
The Imagine Cup is an international competition with the 2005 theme "a world where technology dissolves the boundaries between us." With such a diverse list of competitions encompassing nearly every aspect of computers, there are a variety of areas for interested college students to sign up to compete.
The competitions are in Algorithms, Information Technology, Office Design, Rendering, Short Film, Software Design, Technology Business Planning, Visual Gaming and Web Development. Finalists will be flown to Japan for the final competition, and winners will receive up to $25,000 in prize money and gain international recognition.
To sign up for any of the competitions, visit http://www.imaginecup.com. The contests have officially commenced Nov. 1, but registration is open until March 1.
Daley then spoke about some of Microsoft's upcoming software and technologies. He talked about Visual Studio.net 2005. He said that 51 percent of all fortune 1000 companies use VS.net, and learning to use it now would be a good practical skill to have for the future. The first beta of VS.net 2005 can be obtained from the MSDNAA or at http://msdn.microsoft.com/express. He also mentioned that the second beta is coming out in March.
