Dean Tsetsekos of the LeBow College of Business speaks to students at Fall Fireside Chat Nov. 9. At the chat, Tsetsekos unveiled plans for a stock market lab.

LeBow College of Business Dean George Tsetsekos announced that a sizeable sum of school money would be set aside for students to "play the market, in real time, with real money."

Drexel's Board of Trustees was responsible for making the decision. The announcement came at the CoB Fall Fireside Chat Nov. 9. Students had the opportunity to meet with and ask questions to LeBow dean George Tsetsekos about the current state of the college.

"My goal is to develop this as a process, so that as many students as possible can get involved in learning the techniques of managing a portfolio, selecting securities, diversifying the asset side of the portfolio and reading, analyzing, and comprehending financial data."

"I am working with the finance department because this will be part of the finance curriculum to make sure that the faculty develops an infrastructure to engage students in the process of picking out securities and managing an investment fund," Tsetsekos said.

Tsetsekos added that facilities have been designated and are being developed to support this new venture.

"To compliment this particular project, which is fundamental and important to the learning process ... we are building a trading lab based on support we have received from alums."

"This particular project...will have a sophisticated information feed, sophisticated accesses to the NYSE," added the dean

"We are working with NYSE-based firms, the Big Board, and other providers. The money is there and this will be online in spring."

When asked where the new trading lab will be located, Tsetsekos said, "The computer lab in Matheson will be demolished to make way for the new trading lab, with more aesthetic appeal and the latest technology."

The dean also mentioned several upcoming guest speakers, including Congressman Oxley, a founding supporter of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002; Michael Capellas, the CEO of WorldCom; and LeBow's 2005 Commencement speaker.

"Last year, the students told me I had to think carefully about the commencement speakers. This year, I am very pleased to tell you that the commencement speaker...will be Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz. He is a recognized authority and one of the top minds [in his field]."
