Students donate blood at the third annual Colonial Athletic Association´s Blood Challenge Nov. 4. Drexel´s final results will not be released until Nov. 22 when the last CAA Challenge is complete.

The final results of Drexel blood drive will not be released "until Nov. 22 when the last CAA institution has held their blood drive," Assistant Athletic Director Rebecca Gigli told The Triangle.

"Even in the rain, everyone came out," Gigli said. "We're doing a good service here."

More than 600 Drexel students and faculty participated in the CAA Challenge.

Thirty American Red Cross medical volunteers and nurses were on hand to accept the dozens of students in Behrakis Grand Hall Nov. 4. Blood drives were also set up at the Hahnemann Center City campus and at Queen Lane.

Gigli pointed out that the CAA Challenge is one of the few events that all Drexel campuses participate in together. There were 178 accepted Drexel blood donations in 2002, but Drexel had surpassed those numbers by 3 p.m. with approximately 20 deferrals.

"The spirit of competition was far overshadowed by the spirit of good will and supporting an important cause," Gigli said.

"It's really about saving lives," varsity basketball player Candice Williams said. Williams also participated in the promotion of the blood drive, by dressing up as a vampire before Halloween. Gigli's said that other promotions included coordinating blood drive tee-shirt days, where students, athletes and faculty wore red Drexel CAA Challenge shirts.

In an interview, student Kelly Stewart said she was giving blood in addition to her University 101 service project.

"After the AIDS lecture, I started thinking about what I do," said Stewart.

"We had a great turnout tonight," athlete Shawn Morris said. Morris sits on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and plays on the varsity lacrosse team. "It's all thanks to the students, faculty, everyone on campus, and the Red Cross nurses."

Morris added that many Greek Life members also participated.

"My family is always donating blood, so it's a special thing for me," Alpha Sigma Alpha member Michelle Marchesano said.

Marchesano was not deterred by the hour and a half wait for an intake consultation.

According to the Red Cross Web site, another blood drive is scheduled at Drexel's Queen Lane campus between Jan. 25-26, 2005. Gigli added that each pint of blood donated can save up to three lives.
