Wireless city proposed
Philadelphia officials are considering a proposal that would provide the entire 135 square miles of the city with wireless internet access, at a cost of $10 million. If completed, Philadelphia would be the world's largest area with this service.
Thousands of transmitters around the city would communicate with Wi-Fi network cards to provide broad-band internet access, faster than DSL or cable, and possibly for free. It is estimated that it will cost $1.5 million per year to maintain. Philadelphia Mayor Street has appointed a 14-member committee to plan the details of the project, including whether use would be free of cost. The committee plans to finish the specifics by December 2004 and begin accepting bids from Internet Service Providers in February 2005.
