In a series of continuing twists, Microsoft has now announced that their Internet release of Service Pack 2 will be delayed in light of serious complaints from current users who have installed it.

Users can only install SP2 through Windows Update Services (WUS).

In the interest of meeting deadlines, Microsoft has also announced that the 80MB consumer version, released Aug 18, will only be available for XP Home users, while users of XP Professional will have to wait at least until Aug. 25.

Microsoft themselves have released a notification of over 50 software applications that conflict with the new service pack. The list comprises two articles - one detailing programs that act differently after SP2 is installed, and one detailing programs that stop working. Microsoft has released a couple of patches claiming that it should fix the conflict, but corporations such as IBM are already stalling users from installing the service pack until all problems are solved. Others claim that the security benefits of SP2 easily outweigh these conflicts.

Wide-spread applications such as Photoshop, Symantec antivirus applications, Macromedia programs, games such as Unreal Tournament 2003, Sim City 4, various file sharing programs and even Microsoft's own Visual Studio, SQL server and others are currently noted to face problems are SP2 is installed.

Unofficial counts, however, take the toll to 200 different programs with conflicts.

Microsoft finally released the Service Pack 2 (SP2) for corporate users of its Windows XP operating system last week. Microsoft has been under immense pressure to release the package with the variety and frequency of various security flaws currently known.
