Chirag Desai will take over as The Triangle Editor in Chief effective Aug. 20. Desai defeated Tom Holzerman according to the election results.

The Triangle elected Chirag Desai as its new editor-in-chief August 9.

Desai defeated Online Manager Tom Holzerman for the position in a 10-8 decision. Eligible voters in the election are defined by The Triangle's constitution, and consist of contributing staff.

Desai will replace current EIC Chris Duffy, who served as EIC for 15 months and has been with The Triangle for almost three years.

Duffy's message to the future EIC was clear in his May 17 statement at a general staff meeting: "I don't want The Triangle to fail. I want it to continue to be Drexel's official student newspaper - no matter how many people criticize our decisions, no matter how many internal arguments we have, [and] no matter how many mistakes we print."

Desai joined The Triangle in January 2003 and served as production manager for the paper beginning summer of that year. He was invited to join the Editorial Board in June 2003. Desai has served the paper as managing editor since the beginning of this term.

Among Desai's goals are to continue improving the quality of the paper and its coverage, as well as work through the organization itself, improving the atmosphere as well as interaction between staffers, and between staffers and the University community.

"The EIC serves as the face of the paper, and my goal in this regard would be to focus on the coordination of the paper, both outside and inside."

He also commended Duffy on his achievements.

"Chris [Duffy] has done a great job for the paper and its quality. I'm sure we have all learnt a lot from him and will continue to keep the paper's standard at its best, to completely represent the student community at Drexel."

"I am really excited about my new position and hope that I can bring out the best paper possible," he added.

Desai is currently in his junior year, majoring in computer engineering.

He takes office effective Aug. 20 and his tenure is valid for the fall and winter terms.
