Independence Blue Cross and WXPN's 11th annual singer songwriter weekend is coming up July 16-18. For those of you who have been living their music listening lives with Philly's more popular stations like Y100 and 103.9 The Beat, WXPN-FM 88.5 is the public radio service of the University of Pennsylvania. It focuses on contemporary music - a mix of folk, rock, a lot of acoustic guitar, with a little blues for good measure. Its well-known World Cafe is listened to on more than 150 public radio stations across the U.S.

Many of you have also probably noticed the huge renovation that is taking place by the Walnut Street bridge, an XPN project. This work done on the old Hajoca building will not only give new office space to the station but will also bring a new music venue to Drexel's doorstep.

It is safe to say XPN's three-day weekend at Festival Pier on Penn's Landing is one of the best musical events in Philly. Every year, XPN finds uncharted musical talent and brings it down to the Delaware for our listening enjoyment. The day includes basking in the warm summer sunshine, visiting the vendors that have set up shop, and set after set of ear-pleasing music with thousands of other music supporters.

Last year was my first Singer Songwriter weekend, and as long as I am in Philly, I doubt I will miss another. The weekend Singer Songwriters of the past include Duncan Sheik and John Mayer. This year the station is featuring some of Philly's favorites like Amos Lee, Lauren Hart and Drexel's owns Mutlu. Mutlu was also nominated one of WXPN's "Artists to Watch." Another act worth heading down to see is Rachael Yamagata. She had an amazing opening set for Damien Rice at the TLA several months back and a recent appearance on the Conan O'Brien show. If you're looking for a good way to spend a relaxed July afternoon, check out the details and artist info on XPN's website, http://www.xpn.org.
