"Online courses utilize technologies that support each element of the class for best effectiveness. These technologies can change over time as new products are released through Information Resources and Technology," Smith said. "Web-based technologies are becoming so robust that they may be used in many forms to enhance teaching across the curriculum."

The CoE has been involved with online coursework since 1996, and the college's most frequently used online tool is WebCT. "There are a number of supporting technologies embedded within the WebCT system," Smith said. Starting this fall, Drexel will also offer two freshman humanities courses online: English 101 and Humanities 106.

"The course content and the level of student-teacher interaction will be the same as it is in a standard course," said Derek Soles, associate professor of english and philosophy. "As these are freshman writing courses, students will be required to read and write essays, analyze and interpret poems, short stories and plays, and keep a response journal,"

Soles also said the courses will be set up and run through the WebCT program. There are currently no online courses available to freshman engineers.
