Oscar de la Renta wows Drexel fashion crowd

Michelle Cwanger

Issue date: 5/28/04 Section: Entertainment
It has been brought to my attention that much of the Drexel community has, for far too long, been out of the loop and in the dark as to the current happenings in the departments of fashion design and design and merchandising. Fashion has the ability to serve as an occasional oasis from the daily doldrums in our lives here at Drexel University. The fashion column is my remedy for what also presents itself, in a package of preconceived notions and common misconceptions, that fashion is a field filled only by those lacking the intelligence and drive to pursue a more "serious" career; it is my intent to see this erroneous belief to its grave. I hope to continue to bridge the gap between our College of Media Arts and Design community and yours through an array of rich, engaging articles that enlighten and inspire you to look inside and see what's on our minds.

Some people come into our lives, and we are never ever the same. No matter how familiar we are with finding our way in the dark these days, it's a beautiful thing to know that somewhere out there someone is still holding a light. In a world so centered around everyone breaking everyone else down, to find truly, genuinely good people is to be forever blanketed in a sea of 300-threadcount Egyptian cotton. I have had the luxury of knowing such a man. He once told me never to burn bridges, because one never knows what the future bestows.

First, it was Josie Natori, who seduced us with her silk chemises and her savvy smarts. Then Betsey Johnson coco-bongoed blew us away. This time, we were in for something bigger, something better, something larger than life itself. On April 14, Oscar de la Renta came to Philadelphia and a select group of fashion students from Drexel University have yet to recover.

For most at Drexel, it was a day like any other. For us, it was the first day of the rest of the best days of our lives. Hopping into the back seat of a cab, we watched as we drove past friends on their way to classes that would go on without us. Eager, eccentric, enthusiastic students ranging from freshmen to seniors, from the purple-haired to the basic brown, linked solely by a common thread of passion-driven ambition for everything and all things fashion, one by one exited the car and made their way through the doors of the Park Hyatt at the Bellvue. An escort led us to our designated area. After formal introductions to our assigned models, and a thorough study of each garment's unique placement with its corresponding accessories, the 48th Annual Daisy Day Luncheon began.
