The annual week-long competition between fraternities and sororities, better known as Greek Week, began April 30 and will end May 7.

The three governing councils of Greek organizations - the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Bi-cultural Intergreek Council - organize Greek Week, IFC President John Dougherty said. This year it consists of about 25 events.

A Greek Week Chair is elected from each chapter and works with the council presidents to organize the events, which are sponsored by the Commission for Activities and Programs fund set aside from the Coca-Cola Company on campus for student activities, Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee funding, and the councils.

In preparation for Greek Week 2004, six meetings were set up, Greek Week Chair for Delta Sigma Phi Brian Kline said. He said that trying to organize all the events in one week and getting the schedules of everyone involved to coincide was difficult.

"I think that Greek Week unifies all the fraternities and sororities on campus," Theta Chi member Steven Duong said.

All events are open to spectators and count for various points that will determine the Greek Week champion from each council. The highlights for this year included a talent show, a sexual awareness speaker, a philanthropy collection of clothing for the Salvation Army, a canned-goods drive for the Philadelphia Food Bank, an event called Penny Wars and a date auction to benefit the Nicholas Pipino Memorial Scholarship Fund.

"The weather has been going on our side," Kline said, adding that many non-Greeks have showed up for events in the Quad. "This shows people that we do a lot more [than] people stereotypically think we do. We are not about drinking and hazing." "Greek Week has been a lot of fun," Delta Phi Epsilon member Jacqueline Cecco said. "It's great seeing the entire Greek community come together and having so much spirit."

"We're always telling pledges about Greek Week," Kline said. "You really realize how big the Greek community is during Greek Week. ... In the end we are happy for whoever wins." There is a meeting at the end of the year to discuss Greek Week and plan for the future, Kline said.

Greek Week has been a tradition at Drexel for decades and occurs annually in early May, Dougherty said.

"Greek Week means a lot to most fraternities and sororities," Dougherty said. "It's a time when hundreds of fraternity and sorority members show off how great it is to be a member of Greek life on campus, and while competition gets fierce, it's all in good fun."
