As the clock ticked down in Drexel's Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinal match-up with North Carolina-Wilmington March 6, senior forward Tim Whitworth did everything possible to keep his career at Drexel from ending. Repeatedly looking up at the clock, Whitworth was not ready to let go.

He had expectations coming into Drexel, like every other college basketball player, of making it to the NCAA Tournament.

Unfortunately, his last opportunity passed him by in the game against North Carolina-Wilmington.

"It's tough to swallow right now that it's not going to happen," Whitworth said after the game.

"That was probably my last game."

Whitworth, who came to Drexel in 1999, currently has 1,025 points. With a chance to participate in the National Invitational Tournament, he may have another chance to add to that total.

March 6 against North Carolina-Wilmington, Whitworth played like a player who's college career was on the verge of ending.

He scored 16 points, which included four three-pointers, and grabbed give rebounds. He did this all in only 26 minutes. This was obviously a man who wanted to extend his career one more game.

This is the same player who last year, as a junior, seemed to have made a step backwards after a stellar sophomore season. Men's basketball head coach Bruiser Flint said Whitworth was a different player this time around.

"He came back this year and became a great leader. I told him he's our comeback player of the year because last year, I thought he stunk," Flint said laughing. "You have to give him credit, though; the kid has had a great career."

Whitworth averaged 14.1 points per game, the same as he did his sophomore year, after scoring just 7.0 ppg a year ago. He led the league in three-point percentage with 53 percent and was fourth in the league in field goal percentage at 54 percent.

After being named Most Valuable Player of the Florida International University Classic, Whitworth was named CAA Player of the Week. He was also named to the All-CAA Second Team March 4 at the Colonial Athletics Association awards banquet in Richmond, Va.
