One of the main effects is that faculty will now be required to submit schedules for the entire year at one time.
"All I want is an organized plan for three quarters," Houshmand said. He added that there has always been flexibility and that there will be the same flexibility under the new plan.
"This is for the convenience of everyone," he added.
Houshmand cited reasons for the new plan, saying that "most courses are offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m." He added that space during "peak times" is limited, and for that reason, scheduling classes in that time frame has proven difficult.
"The intention is to make the operation of what we do better," Houshmand said.
Houshmand also informed the faculty that freshmen students will be block registered for classes. In response to this, some faculty expressed concerns.
Jonathan Cheng, a professor in the College of Engineering, stated that 35 percent of students who enroll in CoE are no longer in the program by the end of the first year. He added that the University needs to find a more flexible way of handling registration.
In an effort to address concerns and questions, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jacques Catudal offered to present a "model plan" at the next meeting.
Other questions for Houshmand included issues regarding Drexel's strategic plan and other topics regarding the administration.
In discussion of the "benchmark schools," Houshmand informed the faculty that a list of the institutions are included on the back page of the University's five-year strategic plan.
Regular Faculty Senate business followed the interim provost's question-and-answer session.
The Senate unanimously approved a minor in computer engineering. It also approved the option of a co-op in both construction management and applied engineering technology, which are both Bachelor's of Science programs.
The Senate also unanimously voted to change a prerequisite for COM 380, "Special Topics in Communications," and to change the name of THTR 320 to "Play Direction."
The next Senate meeting is scheduled for April 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Living Arts Lounge.
