"There is no requirement for our students to register annually," Houshmand said. "I will do everything that I can to make sure that department heads have an organized plan for the entire academic year so our students can stand at the beginning of the year and look three quarters into the future." He said that students will continue to register the way they have always done.
"You guys were concerned because you thought that we were trying to force you to register for the whole year," Houshmand said. "I am telling you that you are not required to do so."
Houshmand fielded questions, the majority of which concerned annual registration's affects on students. Houshmand assured the USGA that it would only benefit the student body.
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jacques Catudal was also in attendance. He provided answers to some questions in addition to Houshmand's responses, and Catudal also put to ease concerns about the four-day registration period, saying that it is completely gone. Catudal directly addressed the change in freshman registration.
"Freshmen are going to be block registered this year ... but they will be able to change their classes during the [school] year," Catudal said. In past years, freshmen were only block registered for the first quarter and selected their classes on their own for the remaining terms.
The faculty will have to create schedules for the entire year, Houshmand said. He also said that one goal of annual registration was to get the faculty more organized.
Houshmand reminded the students that an e-mail was sent out March 5 to the undergraduate community, stating that they would not have to worry about registering for an entire year of classes.
