The event, sponsored by the University's Magnificent Minds Program, drew more than a dozen participants and was attended by a number of students and faculty.
This was the first poetry reading Maya has sponsored, and many group members said they hope to hold more readings in the future.
"Hopefully, after Maya's first publication, we can continue to team up with Magnificent Minds for another poetry reading and open mike," said student member James Tobin. Maya's main purpose is to publish the poetry, short fiction and art of the University's undergraduates, as stated by the group's faculty advisor, Associate Professor of English Miriam Kotzin.
There are about 15 students who help put together the literary magazine, which is published once or twice a year and "provides practical experience in publishing a magazine," Kotzin said.
"I think Maya is important because it provides an outlet for students they may not easily find anywhere else," Maya's acting president Julia Curcio said. "Students who are interested in writing but major in subjects that don't allow them to be as creative as they may like to be in their assignments can have the opportunity to share their work with the school in a different way."
