The Drexel chapter of Habitat for Humanity is joining St. Joseph's University and the University of Pennsylvania to raise $45,000 in order to sponsor the restoration of a house for a family

Due to inclement weather, the Habitat for Humanity car wash has been postponed until April 24 and the rescheduled event will be a part of National Volunteerism week. The car wash was originally scheduled for March 6.

The Drexel chapter is in the process of completing their quest to raise $10,000 before May 1 for the sponsorship.

One year ago, the West Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia and Germantown chapters of Habitat for Humanity joined forces to start the new, unified Habitat Philadelphia. In the 15 years prior to the merger, the four independent chapters sponsored the building of 106 homes according to the Habitat Philadelphia Web site, located at http://www.habitatphiladelphia.org.

Now, with better organization of their resources and fund raisers, Habitat Philadelphia organization said it hopes to build at least 14 homes per year. The purpose of Habitat for Humanity, as stated on their Web site, is not to build homes for people, but to build homes with people. The future homeowners help to complete about 350 hours of work on their new home alongside hundreds of volunteers, and habitat then extends a zero interest mortgage to the new homeowners to help them pay off the cost of their new home.

Often the mortgage payment is about $300 per month, less that the average $450 rent fee in Philadelphia.

Habitat for Humanity does not receive direct funding from any government agencies. The organization relies on obtaining the funds from "individuals who believe that access to affordable home-ownership opportunities should be a matter of conscience," the Web site states. Several other fund-raising events have been planned in order to help Drexel raise the additional $7,000 needed to reach its goal by the deadline. A badminton tournament has been scheduled for April 16.

A raffle has been scheduled for the month of April with prizes including X-Box games, restaurant certificates and Habitat T-shirts. Members are considering visiting the dorms in order to sell raffle chances, according to Drexel Habitat chapter president Ryan Murphy,

In addition, Drexel, Penn and St. Joe's are also "involved in talks [led by Drexel] with the City of Philadelphia and the Public Relations Department of the Philadelphia Habitat Affiliate to plan a walk/run along the Schuylkill River to raise money for the house," Drexel Habitat chapter president Ryan Murphy said. "This event will also take place in the spring, hopefully before May 1; but we're still in planning."
