The Department of Defense selected Drexel University, along with Rice University and the University of California at Berkeley, to receive research grants totaling $2.8 million this year and $14.7 million over a five-year spread.
The grants are part of the Department of Defense's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative - a program that focuses on themes crucial to national defense.
The hope of the laboratory instrumentation design research is to not only develop future scientific instruments, but also recruit a new generation of adept scientists and engineers. The invention and implementation of new instruments will help explain current scientific enigmas.
The new discoveries will hopefully address emerging problems in biology and information technology.
The grants are a result of merit competition sponsored by the MURI program. The awards are open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
