SAFAC allocates funding to student organizations

UPDATED: SAFAC allocations list attached

The Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee has set aside $1,585,740 for Drexel University line items and student organizations in the 2010 fiscal year, according to Joseph Gonzalez, SAFAC budget coordinator. The allocation money comes from the $150 student activity fee required of all students at the start of the school year.

Swine flu causes global concerns

Over 100 cases in the United States of the swine flu have been reported, and the influenza virus has killed one toddler in the country near the Mexico border in Texas. Despite reports of the virus outbreak, Marla Gold, dean of Drexel's School of Public Health, said there is nothing different about the clinical presentation of swine flu as compared to regular flu at this time.

Boards feature messages to 'Taki'

Remembrance boards for the late Drexel University President Constantine Papadakis were set up throughout campus to offer students a way to express their feelings for his passing. According to Chakka Reeves, assistant dean for multicultural education and outreach, the remembrance boards were set up by David Ruth, dean of students.

Specter joins Democrats, cites election concerns

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) left the Republican Party April 28 to join the Democrats. "The disappointment runs in both directions," Specter said at a news conference. "I'm putting principle at the top of the list." Specter's switch gives Democrats 59 seats in the Senate, making the party one seat, and one vote, away from having a filibuster-proof 60 seats.

Concert celebrates students' memories

The Drexel chapter of Alpha Chi Rho will host One.25 Music Fest, a benefit concert to honor the memories of John P. Williamson Jr. and Ian Alexander, Drexel seniors and members of the fraternity who died Jan. 25 in a car accident. Four other students, Kevin MacDonald, freshman, engineering major; Adam Marsh, pre-junior, business and engineering major; Andrew Cardamone, freshman, architectural engineering major; and Eric Rayburn, freshman, health sciences major, were injured in the crash while on a fraternity trip in north-central Pennsylvania.

Engineers host comedian Nainan

Dan Nainan, an engineer-turned-comedian, performed April 23 for Drexel students at the second annual engineering comedy show, hosted by the National Organization of Business and Drexel Engineering and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. "We wanted to set up a comedy show for Drexel students, and we felt that Dan was the perfect fit for our show because of his professional background," Zachary Howitt, a junior in business and engineering and the president of Drexel's NOBE chapter, said.

Author promotes revealing look at dating, intimacy

The Office of Victim Support & Intervention Services will host "Can I Kiss You?," a presentation led by Mike Domitrz on healthy dating, consent and sexual assault awareness, May 4. "He gets the message across a lot about consent and dating and talking about body language, and he does it with a sense of humor that students get," Candace Wannamaker, director of the Office of Victim Support & Intervention Services, said.

Greek News

Greek Life participates in City 5K Run Members of Fraternity and Sorority Life will participate in the 17th Annual University City 5K Run as part of Greek Week 2009. Greek Life and the Drexel Alumni Association are teaming together and are actively involved with the run as participants and as volunteers.
