Stimulus package impacts Drexel community

The Drexel community will be affected by President Obama's multi-billion dollar stimulus package in their benefits, loans and around campus. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, passed by President Obama and the Democratic Congress, aims to revitalize the economy by pumping federal money into various industries and sectors.

Men's basketball season comes to abrupt end after first-round loss to Towson

Scott Rodgers sat teary-eyed at the podium in the postgame press conference following No. 6 Drexel's shocking first-round CAA Tournament loss to No. 11 Towson. Rodgers had every right to be emotional. His career had come to an abrupt halt -- if not an end -- as did his team's once promising 2008-09 season.

Students attend environmental conference

Drexel University's Sierra Club took 35 undergraduate and graduate students to the Power Shift 2009 Conference in Washington, D.C., from which they brought back recommendations on making Drexel a more environmentally friendly campus. According to Catherine Burtness-Adams, sophomore hospitality management major and president of the Sierra Club, the four-day conference included a green job career fair along with workshops, panels and lectures on a variety of topics.

IRT works to improve Dragonfly3

Though a portion of the DragonFly3 wireless equipment has yet to be deployed, Drexel is currently working with students to resolve problems with the wireless network in their laptops. Since the 2008 launch of DragonFly3, Drexel University's newest, most secure, and fastest wireless Internet network to date, students have encountered difficulties connecting and staying connected.

Westphal launches new television major

The department of Cinema and Television in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design is launching a new television major, designed for undergraduates, to be built around Drexel's DUTV cable station. According to the college's web site, the television program combines the resources of DUTV with an academic back-bone to provide students with experience in the development, writing, production, editing, programming, multi-platform distribution, management and promotion of television content.

Dining services caters to student savings

Drexel University is looking for ways to provide affordable dining for those students who are strapped for cash due to the current economic recession. "Students who purchase Dragon Dollars or meal plans with Dining Dollars experience a seven percent savings over those who purchase food with cash or credit card because retail food purchases with Dragon Dollars or Meal Plans are not a taxable event," Andrew Manfredo, marketing manager of Drexel Campus Dining, said.

Habitat for Humanity hosts student benefit concert

Habitat for Humanity teamed up with Late Night Series, MADKo Concerts, and WKDU 91.7 FM, to put on HabiJam for Humanity, a benefit concert, to raise awareness on the need for quality housing, March 6. The joint effort was recognized by everyone, according to Tim Plunkett, WKDU's assistant manager and Habitat for Humanity's HabiJam chair, said.

SEPTA benefits from stimulus bill

SEPTA will receive $201 million for several transportation improvement projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. According to Elizabeth Schoonmaker, manager of the Office of Capital Programming of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, the DVRPC board approved the dispersal of $668.

Greek life wins leadership awards

Drexel University Fraternity and Sorority life won five awards at the Northeast Greek Leadership Association 2009 conference. The Drexel Greek community received five out of seven programming awards presented at the 2009 conference, the most of any school in attendance.
