Drexel University hosted a National Teach-In, an initiative generated to create a focus on global warming and climate change in the Bossone Research Center Feb. 5. The teach-in serves to create a day for people to focus on the issue at hand, according to event organizer and sixth-year architecture student Carly Litofsky.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and President Barack Obama are attempting to combat the economic hardships faced by students as the worsening economic climate begins to affect colleges and universities around the country. The governor hopes to enact a plan that will make it easier for students to attend state and community colleges, according to Michael Race, director of the office of press and news communications in the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
A Relay For Life kick-off event was held Feb. 4 both to allow teams and individuals to sign up and to get students motivated for the 12-hour event in April to raise cancer awareness, according to Ryan Wheeler, co-chair for Relay for Life. "We're encouraging teams to do their own fundraisers and keep on top of them," Wheeler said.
Some colleges in the area, including the University of Pennsylvania, have implemented "healthy living" houses, areas for students looking for a drug- and alcohol-free place to live. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, colleges such as Rutgers University and Muhlenberg College have already implemented these houses on their campuses.
Ford, Toyota, General Motors, and other car companies presented their latest lineup for the model year at the 2009 Philadelphia International Auto Show, Jan. 31-Feb. 8 where much of the focus was on fuel efficiency and eco-friendly vehicles. The auto show also marks one week from President Obama's directive of granting states the ability to independently limit their automobile carbon emissions.
Drexel's Violence Information and Education for Women hosted "Human Trafficking: A Conversation," where students learned about human trafficking in Philadelphia and worldwide Feb. 5. Korrine Diggs, who works with the Philadelphia Anti-Tracking Coalition and founded the Philadelphia Stop Modern Slavery Group in June 2008, spoke specifically about the types of trafficking and victim identification in the United States.
Drexel hosted a lecture on "Contemporary Crises in Civil Rights" as part of a series sponsored by the Women's Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Earle Mack School of Law and the Africana Studies Program Feb. 5. "Each year we bring in a visiting scholar to visit some of our campuses so Patricia Williams is our 2009 visiting scholar, and I am coordinating her visit here at Drexel," Rose Corrigan, director of the Women Studies Program, said.
Drexel University, along with other businesses and organizations in the Philadelphia area, participated in Shadowing Day 2009, an opportunity for ninth-graders to explore a day in the workplace, Feb. 3. Shadowing Day allows ninth-graders from Philadelphia high schools to visit their respective workplaces for a day of career exploration.

Looks like the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. Popular gossip web site JuicyCampus.com will shut down today because of the faltering economy, JuicyCampus Founder and Chief Executive Officer Matt Ivester, Trinity '05, announced Wednesday. "Even with great traffic and strong user loyalty, a business can't survive and grow without a steady stream of revenue to support it," Ivester said in a statement.
