The Sierra Club filed suit against Placer County's decision to approve the regional plan for a Drexel University campus west of Roseville, Ca. "Drexel is proposing to locate a campus in an area that is very sensitive and we just think the University should be responsible in choosing a location," Terry Davis of the Mother Lode chapter of the Sierra Club said.
Carl "Tobey" Oxholm was appointed inaugural dean and chief executive officer of Drexel's Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento Jan. 14. According to Oxholm, his appointment was the result of frequent visits to the California campus since last May. "The president decided that he was going to make this my primary duty for the foreseeable future, which in terms of the appointment is two years plus to make this operation succeed," Oxholm said.
Drexel University instituted a nationwide $100,000 Anthony J. Drexel Exceptional Achievement Award for faculty, funded by an anonymous alumnus. "The significance deals with the fact that we have been a real leader in translational research," John DiNardo, vice provost of Academic Affairs, said.
The Drexel University Student Organization Resource Center opened a newly renovated space for student organizations Jan. 14 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the basement of the Creese Student Center. "This will be a new 'one-stop-shop' for the campus student organizations," Dave Ruth, dean of students, said.
Universities around the country may see more research funding in light of President-elect Barack Obama's proposed energy plan, according to Yossef Elabd, assistant professor in chemical engineering. According to Obama's web site, the president-elect's energy plan will create or save 5 million "green collar" jobs by investing $150 million into the "green" energy industry.
Drexel Green, along with the Sierra Club and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability in Philadelphia, will be hosting a series of lectures on climate change at Drexel. The lectures are part of a class on climate change taught by professors Robert Brulle and Susan Kilham.
The Lebow College of Business will launch a Ticker web site next week as an open, for students, by students site to display the campus events hosted by undergraduate business groups, according to Ari Winkleman, site founder and a sophomore majoring in business.
Since its launch in October 2007, JuicyCampus, an online gossip site, currently includes 500 campuses across the country on its site, including University of Pennsylvania, Yale, and Drexel. "C'mon. Give us the juice. Posts are totally 100 percent anonymous," JuicyCampus.

For the second year, University Housing collaborated with Residential Living to create five different housing programs for students for the 2009-10 school year, according to Rita LaRue, senior associate vice president of Drexel Business Services. Prior to the 2008 Housing by Design process, Drexel only guaranteed housing to incoming freshmen.
DUReview.com, a Web site designed to enable Drexel students to see which teachers are right for them has had thousands of visitors and approximately 11,000 posts since its launch in 2002.
