Rendell , Laura Bush honored at Drexel

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and Drexel University President Constantine Papadakis spoke Nov. 10 at a National Distance Learning Week awards ceremony, an annual initiative that works to increase awareness of distance learning at various levels of education, according to an NDLW press release.

Campus holds food drives

As Thanksgiving approaches, Drexel University students and administrators are participating in food drives to benefit American soldiers in Iraq and Philabundance, a food bank and hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley. According to Andrew Manfredo, a member of Drexel's Campus Dining service, Drexel collected about 100 pounds of food Nov.

Students fool 'PINK' poll

Drexel University is ranked first and has approximately 5.2 million votes on the Victoria's Secret PINK web site in a competition to nominate schools to receive a PINK collegiate line of clothing. A computer script was written Oct. 21 around 3 a.m. in about three minutes, and ran for almost 12 hours on 30 different computers, casting approximately 1,500 votes per second, increasing Drexel's votes from approximately 1,000 to 5.

DU researchers hold chocolate tasting

The Academic Bistro held a Chocolate Tasting Nov. 11 to show how chocolate consumption is healthy, according to Jennifer Nasser, assistant professor of Biosciences and Biotechnology. According to Nasser, chocolate improves oxidative stress, helps prevent atherosclerosis, and significantly lowers blood pressure.

IRT goes 'green'

Drexel University's Information, Resources and Technology Department has joined Drexel Green's efforts to become more environmentally-friendly with computer use, equipment and printing, according to John Bielec, vice president for IRT. The IRT department has responded to a series of policies outlined in the last issue of "Sustainability: The Journal of Record" in an article titled "Green IT 101.

Drexel alumnus leads mission to space

Christopher Ferguson, a Drexel alumnus, will lead a team of astronauts on a launch scheduled for Nov. 14 at 7:55 p.m. A veteran space flier, Ferguson will be leading his seven-person team as mission commander for the first time for the space shuttle Endeavour, which will be going to the International Space Station.

Budget cuts affect Philly

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter released budget cuts last week that could leave the city with a $1 billion shortfall, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. In a 10-minute televised address, Nutter outlined the budget cuts that will close libraries, cut more than 800 jobs and trim salaries for some administrators in response the national economic crisis.
