For the first time in a quarter of a century, a major professional Philadelphia sports franchise has won a title. The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in Game 5 Oct. 29, to win the World Series four games to one. Third baseman Pedro Feliz drove in the game-winning run with a one-out RBI single to center in the seventh inning that plated pinch runner Eric Bruntlett.
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has won the votes necessary to become President of the United States, defeating Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.),according to the Wall Street Journal. As of 1:38 a.m., Obama had secured 52 percent of the nation's popular vote, with 338 electoral votes.
Students gathered Nov. 4 in the Main Building Grand Court to watch the results of the 2008 Presidential Election between Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Drexel University students were invited to watch CNN's coverage of the election on a large projection screen.
University City Main Campus and the Center City Hahnemann Campus hosted the seventh-annual "Have a Heart" Colonial Athletic Association Blood Challenge Oct. 30 with Drexel Athletics and the Center for Civic Engagement. The CAA this year looks to achieve a goal of 620 pints of blood, according to Heather Lindley, a senior manager of operations for the Red Cross.
Freshmen can now use DegreeWorks, a new web-based advising software, for scheduling, according to Harri Weinberg, senior systems analyst in the academic information and systems department. DegreeWorks is an advising software Drexel University recently bought to help students plan their academic careers and assist in scheduling matters.
Two students were robbed at gunpoint inside their home on 3200 Summer St. Oct. 28 around 4 p.m. when perpetrators entered the house through an unlocked door, according to an incident report from Drexel's Department of Public Safety. One victim was lying on the couch and one was in the house when two suspects entered the house through an unlocked door, according to Robert Lis, assistant director of investigations for Drexel Public Safety.
The University's Department of Public Safety has implemented an improved DrexelAlert system that will allow students to receive alerts within minutes to mobile phones, Drexel landlines and wireless PDAs. "[The alert system] has more capabilities that include voicemails, e-mails, faxes and text messages.
The Drexel Democrats debated the Drexel Republicans Oct. 29 about their corresponding presidential candidates' economic policies, covering issues including the free market and education reform. The College Republicans, represented by Nick Wascovich, Ivan Skakun and Raghav Srinivasan, began the debate with an overview of Republican presidential candidate Sen.
