University proposes street closure

The Powelton Village Civic Association will be presenting design ideas to Drexel regarding the proposal to close Race Street between 33rd and 34th streets, according to Mike Zuckerman, a member of the board of the PVCA. The proposal for the streets to close will involve creating a North Mall area around the freshman residence hall, but construction has not yet started because Race Street has not been closed, according to Brian Keech, vice president for Government Affairs and Community Relations.

Classes in session during DU-Penn match

Although the men's basketball team will kick off its season by hosting Penn for the first time in program history at the Daskalakis Athletic Center Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. on ESPN, many students may not be in attendance or in their apartments watching it on television.

VP candidates debate economy, Iraq

Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) debated Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) on Oct. 2 as both politicians sought to be the next Vice President of the United States. As the debate started out, Gwen Ifill, journalist for PBS and debate moderator, greeted the candidates. Palin broke the silence on stage by saying to the democratic candidate, "Hey, can I call you Joe?" Ifill started the debate with Joe Biden and immediate focus was placed on the state of America's economy.

Springsteen plays free concert for Obama rally

Bruce Springsteen performed a free concert on the Parkway Oct. 4 to promote voter registrations, two days before the Monday deadline, according to Zach Friend, a spokesman for the Obama campaign. The fully volunteer driven event was organized in about a week after the campaign received a call from Springsteen saying he wanted to perform a free concert to help with voter registration in Pennsylvania, according to Friend.

Drexel Green group sets action plan for fall term

The Drexel Green organization, founded and organized by Drexel's Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Tobey Oxholm, held its first meetings of the fall term Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 to discuss and develop plans for the committees on sustainability. These first meetings, according to Anoo Sukhia, former chairperson of the sustainability committee and coordinator's committee, were mainly for the purpose of discussing the organization's action plan for the fall quarter.

Actors attend "8 for '08" at DU

Mehcad Brooks, an actor from "Desperate Housewives," and Rachel Leigh Cook, who has acted in various movies including "Nancy Drew," came to Drexel University Sept. 29 as part of the Obama campaign's "8 for '08" event. Owners rename new bar, restaurant due to trademark

Yardhouse American Grill & Sports Bar, the restaurant replacing Ecco Qui, has changed its name to Mikey's American Grill & Sports Bar after speaking with representatives from Yard House Inc. to avoid confusion with other companies, according to an e-mail from Jeff Sotland, co-owner of Mikey's American Grill & Sports Bar.

Drexel student reports assault near campus

Philadelphia Police are investigating a sexual assault reported by a Drexel student Sept. 27, according to NBC10. According to the reports, the attack allegedly happened at 418 Saunders Ave. in Mantua. Drexel issued a statement that Drexel Public Safety was informed of a sexual assault that occurred off-campus involving a female student.
