For a series that has dated back to the 1920-21 season, one would expect Drexel to host Penn every other year, or due to the Palestra's historic presence, maybe every three or four years. But through the 2007-08 men's basketball season, despite the fact that these campuses are literally just a stone throw away from each other, all 20 matchups between these two Philadelphia rivals have been played at the Palestra, Penn's home court.
As the first week of school comes to a close, fall sports are in full swing. The conference season is upon us and while the field hockey (7-2) and women's soccer team (5-2) are finding success early, the men's soccer team (2-3-2) is struggling to put together consistency on the offensive side of the ball.
The men's basketball team has released its schedule for the 2008-09 season. The Dragons will kick off their season with a national televised game on ESPN against the rival Penn Nov. 18 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Gametime is set for 10 a.m. Drexel will travel to Georgetown to play the Hoyas Nov.
Drexel men's basketball coach Bruiser Flint had been politicking for his team to host Penn ever since his tenure began eight years ago. "It's the 20th meeting of Drexel-Penn," Flint said last year after the Dragons knocked off the Quakers in overtime for just their fifth win in the history of the rivalry.
While it may have seemed like just a sidebar due to the historical groundbreaking event outside the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Drexel University Recreation Department held its annual Kickoff Event for Rec Sports Sept. 23 along Lancaster Walk. A variety of tables lined the path, as interested students were able to interact with members of all 33 club teams, intramural teams, fraternities and sororities.
