Stratton suspect facing federal charges

The man charged with attacking a Drexel University professor has been charged in 17 robberies across Philadelphia and has been indicted on federal weapons possession charges, police said. The man, Michael Gomez, also known as Marvin Sutter, allegedly punched and robbed a Drexel University professor in her Stratton Hall office May 29, according to police.

DAC and Nesbitt Hall without power after outage

Several Drexel University buildings were among the 290 PECO customers that lost power shortly after 1 p.m. Aug. 7, according to University and PECO officials. Only three customers remain without power, including Nesbitt Hall and the Daskalakis Athletic Center, officials said the afternoon of Aug.

DPS links three robberies to same suspect

Drexel University Public Safety officials have linked three strong-arm robberies to the same suspect, prompting a campus alert that was issued July 19. The robberies were committed in the late evening and early morning in the area bound by 34th to 36th streets and Powelton Avenue to Spring Garden Street, according to a University-wide e-mail.

DU to upgrade DragonFly across campus

Drexel University will soon complete a project that will upgrade its wireless network across its main campus. Aruba Networks was selected to take on the project that will fully upgrade DragonFly, Drexel's wireless network, for the first time since 2004. "Last year we knew we would be starting the replacement cycle," Ken Blackney, associate vice president of IRT, said.

Drexel's online enrollment rises

Recent statistics released by Drexel University show that interest in online learning is up. Statistics show a 22 percent increase in inquiries from prospective students during May and June when compared with the same period last year. The statistics show a continuation of the trend of shifting toward online learning.

Renowned chef visits with local teens

Local teens who are growing and cooking with their own vegetables through the Teens 4 Good program received a visit July 21 from Georges Perrier, a renowned French chef, at Drexel's 11th Street Family Health Services. Drexel's 11th Street Family Health Services has been connected with Teens 4 Good for over two years, but this is the first summer harvest at this garden, according to Jennifer Andia, health educator and outreach coordinator at 11th Street.

Jones becomes interim dean of Honors

David Jones has accepted the appointment of interim dean of the Pennoni Honors College after former Dean Mark Greenberg took the position of interim provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs. Jones is committed for one year to the position. "I'm just an interim dean and won't impose major changes.

National Geographic features Hearn's work to protect wildlife

Oil prices affect construction costs

The rising oil prices have affected the cost of almost everything, including Drexel's construction projects. Robert Francis, vice president for Facilities, didn't deny this, but cautioned against overreactions. "Energy prices absolutely work their way into the price of everything, but this recent run-up in oil prices is not the first run-up over the last several years," Francis said.

DAC construction not affected by potential sink hole

Drexel University was notified by the City of a potential sink hole at 33rd Street directly off of Market Street, and that it will not affect construction for the new Recreational Center, according to Jim Katsaounis, executive director of communications for the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services.

Admins engage in 'green culture'

Drexel Green, an initiative to make the University more environmentally friendly, now consists of an administrative team of sustainability coordinators from all departments, colleges, schools and divisions at the University, according to Tobey Oxholm, executive vice president and chief of staff, who initiated the Drexel Green initiative.
