Drexel takes over Armory

After more than 10 years of planning, the University has signed a 50-year lease of the Philadelphia Armory, located in the heart of Drexel's University City campus. The Armory, which is under the control of the National Guard, has served as drill hall for the ROTC for years, and will now be recreated as a basketball arena and convocation center.

Chelsea Clinton visits CoL

Drexel University's College of Law hosted Chelsea Clinton April 17 in an open-forum discussion that covered aspects of her mother's campaign and issues of concern to graduate students. The discussion covered a ranged of topics, from student loans to health care to employment.

Clinton, Obama debate in Philly

Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton took the stage at the National Constitution Center April 16 to debate for the first time in seven weeks. During the debate, moderated by ABC's Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, the candidates spent the first 45 minutes discussing religion, honesty and patriotism instead of addressing policy issues.

Students question Trayless Tuesdays

Drexel University has implemented a "Trayless Tuesday" program at the Handschumacher Dining Center in an effort to increase environmental sustainability and reduce waste for the month of April. According to Rita LaRue, senior vice president of Drexel Business Services, Drexel and Sodexho have only recently decided to implement the program, which leaves students to carry their food without a tray.

Students start WKDU sports show

Drexel University has been rapidly expanding over the past few years, from new colleges, to athletic facilities, to dorm rooms, to the 24-hour Café. Besides the obvious signs of growth at the university, two students have made history at Drexel. This month, Brett Fischer and Michael Mazzeo began what numerous University sources call Drexel's first sports radio show.

Drexel holds its first-ever Buzzing for Change event on campus

Drexel held its first-ever Buzzing for Change event in the Korman Quad April 16, where people shaved their heads, cut their hair or donated money in an effort to help children living with cancer. Tentative totals for the event at Drexel included $6,400 raised, 69 buzz cuts and 31 haircuts, according to Kelsey Gold, a pre-junior majoring in chemical engineering and the president of Buzzing for Change at Drexel "Buzzing for Change has a lot of potential at Drexel," Judah Ferst, president of the Buzzing for Change Foundation and the organization's founder, said.

University City underwear run goes "unofficial"

The proposed University City "Undie Run" has been changed to a "bathing suit run" with a new route after Drexel University and City of Philadelphia officials declined to support the original concept, event organizers said. The fact that runners would strip down to their undergarments was of concern to city and University officials, Andrew Gould, USGA Greek Life Representative, said.

Relay for Life raises more than $41,000 for Cancer

The second annual Relay for Life event took place in the Armory April 12, with fundraising activities for students including a root beer pong tournament, a Miss Relay pageant, and a Luminaria ceremony, according to Joe Berta, co-chair of Relay for Life. Drexel University's Formula SAE team will compete in the Formula SAE VIR competition at the Virginia International Raceway from April 23 to April 26. The Formula SAE is a collegiate competition hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers that challenges teams to design, fabricate and compete with small Formula-style cars, according to SAE International.

Ben Folds selected as Spring Jam headlining act

The Campus Activities Board has selected Ben Folds as the headlining act for Spring Jam, the student organization's annual free concert and festival. Ben Folds was picked out of over 100 bands that were originally suggested by students on CAB's web site and on their Facebook group.

Drexel to expand recycling program

Under the Environmental Sustainability component of the Power of Ten initiative, Drexel is expanding its recycling program by adding new receptacle bins and educating students on its environmental efforts. The initiative began with concern from the students, and the Undergraduate Student Government Association took the issue to Student Life.
