It was an emotional night for Frank Elegar and Randy Oveneke. Senior night brings out all the friends and family to watch the final home game of the season, and the Dragons delivered a thriller. Drexel edged the James Madison Dukes 70-67 Feb. 27 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
It was a milestone night for Gabriela Marginean. Marginean scored a game-high 28 points and became the first sophomore and 18th player in Drexel women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points in the Dragons' 68-63 win over Towson Feb 28. "It feels great," Marginean said of her latest accomplishment, which came after she converted a free throw to complete a three-point play early in the first half.
After losing its first game of the season at home, the men's lacrosse team proved why it is ranked in the top 20 in the country. No. 15 Drexel defeated Lehigh 13-7 at Vidas Field Feb. 26. Drexel (2-1) built a 5-2 lead at halftime and scored another goal to make it 6-2.
Gwenna Johnson's free position goal had Drexel right on No. 6 Penn's heels. The Dragons trailed 6-5 with 6:47 remaining and needed just one goal to tie the game. Unfortunately, Drexel would take two costly penalties down the stretch and was unable to knot the score a man down.
It would've been easy for the No. 18-ranked Drexel men's lacrosse team to pack it in. They trailed Penn 8-5 late in the fourth quarter and the freezing conditions were rather unbearable. However, the resilient Dragons (1-1) responded with four consecutive goals to complete a miracle comeback as they stunned the Quakers (0-1) 9-8 at Franklin Field Feb.
The women's lacrosse team shutout Villanova in the second half and rolled to a 13-3 win Feb. 27 at Villanova Stadium. The Dragons (3-1) picked up their third road win of the season. Gwenna Johnson led Drexel with four goals on the offensive end and Lauren LaBella only gave up three goals in over 47 minutes of play.
Drexel's performance against Fairfield certainly didn't mirror that of a team that had won two of its last three games. The Dragons seemed to lack passion and a sense of urgency in their 60-51 BracketBusters game loss to the Stags Feb. 23. "You got to come ready to play," head coach Bruiser Flint said.
Gabriela Marginean led Drexel with a game-high 20 points, but No. 10 Old Dominion snapped the Dragons' three-game winning streak with a 66-51 victory at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va., Feb. 24. Drexel (15-11, 10-5 CAA) started the game by falling behind 20-4 but came back and trailed but just five in the second half.
Ryan Hluschak ended his wrestling career at the Daskalakis Center on a high note. Hluschak (29-4) trailed 5-1 but came back to tie the match at five when his opponent James Nakasone was called for stalling just before the final period ended. Early in overtime, Hluschak was able to get a takedown as he earned a 7-5 victory by decision, highlighting Drexel's 26-12 loss to Lehigh on Senior Day Feb.
An undefeated season in basketball for both Pike and TKE ensured their appearance in this Winter's IFC Championship match that will be played on Sunday March 9th at 6:30pm on Center Court. This is a pivotal match for both Fraternities, as Pike holds a slim lead in the IFC Cup standings over rival TKE.
