Located across the street from University Crossings near 32nd and Market streets, Happy Star All-American cuisine, also known as Happy Star, appears to be like every other lunch truck-but only as far as appearance goes. After talking to the vendor, I found that the grilled chicken hoagie is the most popular item on the menu.
Pyramid Pizza's owner, Jimmy, has a lot of pride in his signature "Jimmy" hoagie. Each sandwich goes by a different family member, like Jimmy's mom, Jimmy's brother, or Big Fat Jimmy. I opted for Jimmy's Sister, a concoction of steak, cheese whiz, tomato sauce, mozzarella sticks, fries and breaded chicken tenders, along with a touch of hot sauce.
At first glance, Kim Dragon's Chinese food cart and Mai's Chinese food cart appear to be more or less the same. The food, however, makes a world of a difference between the two. At Kim's, the vendors directed me to a board next to the front window with a list of their specialties.
A personal favorite, the little "creperie" on wheels, La Dominique, is located on Market Street, off of 33rd Street, right in front of the College of Law. In a tiny silver truck, the owner, an artist of 40 years, serves up delicious crepes ranging from the classic and sweet, to the modern breakfast and lunch crepes.
For a quick Middle Eastern fix, stop by this truck, located on Ludlow Street, down by 31st Street. The truck offers a variety of authentic Middle Eastern fare, including falafel, kababs, and shawarma. It also offers more run-of-the mill items like cheese steaks, and sandwiches.
George's is the first truck in the line behind the Main Building, and judging by the size of the lunchtime crowd, one of the most popular. George's offers the typical lunch truck food, including hoagies, sandwiches, steaks, salads, and breakfast items.
Sam is the boss at Ulysses' truck, often called the "yellow truck" because of the yellow menus posted out front. It is the second lunch truck behind the Main Building, next to George's. Sam offers a variety of lunch and breakfast favorites including hoagies, salads, pizza, clubs and steaks.
Few people call this truck by its real name. Instead, people opt to call it the "Greek Truck" or the "TV Truck." It is true that the proprietor is Greek, and he does offer a variety of Greek specialties including gyros, ntolmades, souvlaki and tasty baklava.
