Feb. 18, 2007, the men's lacrosse team upset Virginia, the then-ranked No. 1 team in the country, marking one of the biggest upsets in Drexel sports history. This year, the Dragons look to add to their success and establish itself as one of the elite lacrosse programs in the nation.
It was a fight for every inch and every point, but ultimately the women's basketball team prevailed. Gabriela Marginean scored a game-high 19 points, including nine points down the stretch that broke a tie and gave Drexel a late cushion, and Narissa Suber added 14 as the Dragons (13-10, 8-4 CAA) pulled out a gutsy 48-42 win Feb.
The men's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit and had a five-point lead after Tramayne Hawthorne hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining in the game. But Old Dominion (8-6, 13-13) sent the game to overtime after Brandon Johnson hit a trey with two seconds remaining in regulation.
In recent years, there has been a quasi-takeover of college basketball by "Mid-Majors." Gonzaga formed into a mini-powerhouse out of the West Coast Conference and has become a regular in the Top 25 (although not this year). The Missouri Valley Conference in particular developed into a land of giant killers, sending several teams to the Sweet 16 in recent years.
They say the situation is always at its darkest before the light. Drexel had lost six straight and nine of 10 games, but the team has been playing well lately. The Dragons finally broke through at the Daskalakis Athletic Center with a 65-51 win over the Towson Tigers Feb.
