Table Tennis Trials hit D.U.

On the eve of one of the biggest events to hit Drexel University this decade, nothing filled the room but elation. As a Ben Franklin impersonator greeted guests and the sound of drums and cymbals resonated through the room during the Dragon Dance, one thing was for certain - the road to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing will go through Drexel University in Philadelphia.

IRT to offer new e-mail services by spring

Drexel University is expected to announce a host of new student communications tools, during the weekend of Jan. 11, including email, chat and online storage from both Google and Microsoft, according to Drexel officials. The services will be Google Apps for Education, Microsoft's Live@edu, and Microsoft's ExchangeLabs.

Townhall meetings canceled for winter term

President Papadakis has postponed all town hall meetings until spring term due to scheduling conflicts, according to Dean of Students David Ruth. Undergraduate Student Government Association Student Life Assembly Chair Stacey Rose said that three town hall meetings scheduled at the end of fall term for center city students, Greek life, and upperclassmen were all cancelled.

Nutter receives federal grant for emergency communications program A $656,000 grant will be given to Philadelphia as the first step in a $10 million project to improve communications between SEPTA police and Philadelphia police, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Student organizations prepare for'08 elections

The political fervor rose last week in light of the Iowa and New Hampshire caucuses held Jan. 3 and Jan. 5, respectively. The caucuses began the course towards the 2008 presidential Election Day and have sparked responses to the upcoming change in Washington.

A new program, Bike Share Philadelphia, is hoping to help student traffic with a public use bicycle program. Bike Share Philadelphia is holding a public forum Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. to promote their program and potentially implement their program, according to Russell Meddin, one of the event's organizers.

MAD Dragon wins indie award

Independent Music Awards, which recognizes Indie artists worldwide, presented their first-ever College Record Label Award on Dec. 18 to MAD Dragon. MAD Dragon won for Hoots & Hellmouth's album, and placed as a finalist for Andrew Lipke's album "The Way Home.

Interior design program ranked among best in U.S.

Drexel's undergraduate and graduate interior design programs are now among the nation's elite, ranked 10th and 13th in the nation, respectively, by DesignIntelligence, a bi-monthly publication created by design industry professionals. These rankings were listed in DesignIntelligence's ninth annual publication entitled "America's Best Architecture and Design Schools.

Student depression rates rising

Today's college students are twice as likely to be depressed and three times more likely to be suicidal than they were a decade ago, according to a recent study. "For a variety of reasons, school is more stressful than it was 10 years ago," said Sherry Benton, assistant director of training at Kansas State University and one of the researchers of the study, which was published in February.

Table Tennis draws a crowd

Philadelphia's new Mayor, Michael Nutter, attended the welcome reception for Olympic and National Team Trials for Table Tennis on Jan. 9 at the Paul Peck Alumni Center. The Mayor's visit was an important step for Drexel, according to Eric Zillmer, Drexel University's athletic director.
